Davis Heart and Lung Institute
The Ohio State University - Columbus, OH
Paul J. Ford and Company designed the new seven-story 142,000 square foot Davis Heart and Lung Institute for The Ohio State University. This building consists of a state-of-the-art research and teaching facility for several majors and interdisciplinary research programs. In addition to its research space, this building has a 220-seat auditorium, three classrooms and six conference rooms located throughout its layout.
For its lateral stability, this research facility was designed utilizing cast-in-place concrete moment frames supported on deep foundations that bear on bedrock. Each level of floor framing is constructed with wide module concrete “skip-joists’ and beams. A main focal point and design requirement of this building was the central, full-height atrium, which is crossed by a network of access bridges.
